Public sculpture for a living

Wednesday, June 14, 2006

Roadside Marker by Velislav Georgiev was created for Frankston City Council in Melbourne, Australia.
The sculpture sits between the Nepean Highway and the sand dunes that lead to the beach below. The design came from thoughts about the wind, sails, netting and the movement of water. When you look at the sculpture you might be able to imagine being shipwrecked and building yourself a raft or you might think about windsurfing or sailing or it could remind you of tankers or sea buoys.
This sculpture began its life as a pencil sketch in 2005 when Velislav was invited to submit a concept to Council. Once the design was accepted, drawings were prepared for engineering and fabrication.
The fabrication took place in Ballan, which is a small town in regional Victoria. Velislav created the stainless steel webbing/netting in his studio (visible in the photo as a shadow) and the rest of the fabrication and the painting was undertaken in the local industrial estate.
